Sunetra Pawar expresses gratitude as Baramati bypoll voting concludes

Baramati, April 23 (IANS) After a high-stakes and emotional day of voting for the Baramati Assembly by-election, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP President Sunetra Pawar on Thursday issued a heartfelt message of gratitude to the people and political supporters.
The by-election, necessitated by the demise of former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in January, saw a steady turnout as citizens cast their votes to determine the future of this crucial Assembly constituency.
As per the Election Commission of India, 52.48 per cent voting was reported till 5 p.m. while the final voting percentage will be released late Thursday evening.
However, NCP sources said that about 60 per cent voting has taken place despite hot weather.
In her statement, Sunetra Pawar described the act of voting as a “moving tribute” to the memory of her husband late Ajit Pawar.
She noted that the participation of the “Baramatikars” (residents of Baramati) reflected their deep-rooted love and trust in the work he (Ajit Pawar) had accomplished.
“Today’s vote was more than a political exercise; it was a heartfelt homage to Ajit Dada’s memory. The tireless efforts he put in for Baramati and his immense love for the people were evident in the actions of every voter today,” she said.
In a rare show of political unity, Sunetra Pawar extended her thanks not only to the Mahayuti alliance (BJP, NCP, and Shiv Sena) but also to members of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) and various social organisations.
Notable developments leading up to the poll included NCP-SP’s decision to support Sunetra Pawar’s nomination.
The Sharad Pawar-led NCP-SP opted not to field a candidate against Sunetra Pawar as a mark of respect.
The Congress withdrew its candidate late in the race, effectively smoothing the path for an unopposed-style contest.
The Deputy Chief Minister specifically praised the election officials, police, and party workers for ensuring a “smooth, transparent, and disciplined” polling process.
The Baramati Assembly constituency has 3.84 lakh registered voters.
In all 23 candidates, including Sunetra Pawar were in the fray.
However, the withdrawal of major opposition parties has positioned Sunetra Pawar as the clear frontrunner to carry forward the Pawar legacy in the state Assembly.
Results for the Baramati by-election are scheduled to be officially announced on May 4.
