Hyderabad: Civil Supplies Officials Inspect Over 17 Rice Wholesale Shops in Mehdipatnam Amid Price-Hike Complaints

Hyderabad, October 30: The Civil Supplies Authorities here on Friday carried out a sudden inspection at over 17 wholesale rice shops in Mehdipatnam area, following complaints that traders were selling rice at inflated prices and allegedly engaging in unfair trade practices.
Assistant Civil Supplies Officer Bushra Sultana led the inspections, during which alleged irregularities were detected at some establishments. Officials reportedly found that certain 25-kg rice bags contained 1–2 kg less rice than the quantity mentioned on the packaging.
The inspections are part of the department’s efforts to investigate the recent rise in rice prices in Hyderabad, check possible illegal sale of Public Distribution System (PDS) rice and prevent malpractices in the wholesale market.
There have also been allegations that some traders purchase ration rice at lower prices, polish it and subsequently sell it in the open market at higher rates. Such practices, if established, could not only violate regulations but also affect consumers and undermine the public distribution system.
With complaints of rising prices and possible exploitation of consumers mounting, Civil Supplies authorities have stepped up inspections to identify irregularities, verify stock records and ensure that traders adhere to prescribed rules.
The department is expected to take appropriate action against those found violating regulations, with the objective of curbing illegal trading, preventing underweight sales and protecting consumers from further financial burden.
