School Safety Cannot Be Negotiable: Anantapur and Panchkula Incidents Raise Serious Concerns

Schools are meant to be safe spaces where children learn, grow and prepare for their future. Parents send their children to educational institutions with the confidence that they will be protected and cared for. However, two disturbing incidents in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, and Panchkula, Haryana, have raised serious questions about student safety and the responsibility of school administrations.

In Anantapur, a Class 10 student was attacked with a wood-cutting machine inside her school. In Panchkula, a six-year-old girl suffered serious injuries after being assaulted with a brick and beaten by another student. Though the circumstances differ, both incidents highlight the urgent need to strengthen child protection in educational institutions.

These incidents should not be dismissed as isolated cases. They must serve as wake-up calls for school authorities, parents and education departments. Schools need strict visitor verification, controlled entry, adequate staff supervision, functional CCTV cameras and clear emergency response mechanisms. Security arrangements must be regularly reviewed rather than treated as mere formalities.

Equally important is addressing the emotional and behavioural well-being of children. Counselling should become an integral part of school education, helping students manage anger, frustration, rejection and conflicts without resorting to violence. Teachers must be trained to recognise signs of bullying, aggression and emotional distress.

Parents also have an important role in maintaining open communication with their children and identifying behavioural changes at an early stage.

Education must go beyond textbooks and examinations. Empathy, mutual respect, compassion, gender sensitivity and non-violence should be nurtured from childhood.

The real success of an educational institution lies not only in academic results but also in the safety and well-being of its students.

Prevention must come before tragedy.
