North Korea fires short-range ballistic missile toward East Sea: South Korea’s military
Seoul, Aug 6 (IANS) North Korea fired at least one short-range ballistic missile toward the East Sea on Thursday, South Korea’s military said.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said the missile was launched from the eastern coastal Wonsan area in the North at around 5 pm (local time). The number of missiles launched was not immediately known.
“While strengthening monitoring and surveillance against potential additional launches, our military is maintaining a full readiness posture and closely sharing relevant information with the United States and Japan,” the JCS said, Yonhap News Agency reported.
The latest launch comes over a month after North Korea last conducted the test of a tactical ballistic missile as well as new multiple rocket launchers and other weapons on June 25, overseen by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
The North’s weapons tests coincided with the 76th anniversary of the outbreak of the 1950-53 Korean War, in an apparent bid to demonstrate its ability to target major facilities in the South.
Thursday’s launch came ahead of South Korea’s annual summertime joint military exercise with the US, Ulchi Freedom Shield, which is expected for later this month.
The presidential national security office immediately convened a meeting attended by officials from the defence ministry and the JCS to instruct them to maintain an alert response posture and assess the impact of the launch on South Korea’s national security.
The office also labelled the North’s ballistic missile launch as a provocation that violates United Nations Security Council resolutions and called for its immediate halt.
In May, South Korea’s military said North Korea fired multiple close-range ballistic missiles (CRBMs) and artillery rockets toward the Yellow Sea.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said it detected the missiles launched from the Jongju area of North Phyongan Province at around 1 pm (local time) on May 26, without elaborating on the details.
CRBMs refer to ballistic missiles that have a relatively short range of less than 300 kilometres.
The missiles flew some 80 kilometres before landing at sea, the JCS said, noting it was analysing the exact specifications of the launch with the US side.
The JCS said North Korea fired various types of projectiles, including CRBMs and shells from multiple rocket launchers in what appeared to be a rare launch of a mix of such weapons. The launch is also believed to have involved “suicide drones.”
