MP Congress to chalk out strategy for Monsoon session, UCC among key focus areas

Bhopal, July 17 (IANS) The Madhya Pradesh Congress Legislature Party (CLP) will meet here on July 19 to finalise its strategy for the Monsoon Session of the state Assembly, with the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill and several public issues expected to dominate the Opposition’s agenda.

The meeting, to be held at the residence of Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the state Assembly, Umang Singhar, on July 19 evening, comes a day before the five-day Assembly session begins on July 20, Congress sources said on Thursday.

According to the Congress, party MLAs will deliberate on key public issues to be raised in the House and formulate a coordinated strategy to take on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government during the session.

Among the issues likely to be discussed are the alleged land scam involving Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and his family, agrarian distress, unemployment, recruitment examinations, the demand for an annual government job calendar, rights of tribals and Dalits, crimes against women, education, healthcare, and alleged corruption in the state.

The meeting assumes significance as the BJP government is expected to table the draft Uniform Civil Code Bill in the Assembly after obtaining the Cabinet’s approval on July 18.

Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar said the Congress Legislature Party would strongly raise issues concerning the people during the session.

“The Congress Legislature Party will vigorously raise the voice of the people in the Assembly. Serious questions are constantly being raised regarding unemployment, corruption, women’s safety, the Ken-Betwa project, and the rights of tribals and Dalits. The government cannot evade accountability,” Singhar added.

He said the Congress would seek answers from the state government on issues affecting different sections of society.

“The upcoming Assembly session will be an occasion to effectively raise public interest issues and demand answers from the government. With full preparation and unity, the Congress Legislature Party will present the people’s expectations in the House and compel the government to respond to issues concerning every section of society,” he added.

The Monsoon Session is expected to witness a heated debate over the proposed UCC Bill, which the BJP government has projected as a major legislative initiative.

Besides the proposed law, the Congress is also expected to corner the state government over issues relating to farmers, unemployment, recruitment, law and order, and alleged corruption, setting the stage for a politically charged session of the Assembly.
