HYDERABAD Oct 26: The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has launched action against the illegal extraction and commercial sale of groundwater near Sunnam Cheruvu, where borewells installed inside residential houses were allegedly being used to draw water for commercial distribution through underground pipelines.

According to the information available, some borewells had been installed inside houses, including bedrooms and kitchens, and were reportedly being used to extract groundwater for sale. The water was allegedly supplied through underground pipelines, raising concerns over the unauthorised exploitation of groundwater resources in the area.

HYDRAA carried out a joint operation with officials from the CMC, Revenue Department and Hyderabad Water Board to check the illegal activity. During the operation, the teams removed unauthorised borewells and took steps to curb the illegal extraction and commercial trading of groundwater.

The action was aimed at preventing the unauthorised use of groundwater resources and ensuring that water meant for public use was not exploited for private commercial gain. The presence of borewells inside residential premises being used for commercial purposes also raised concerns about the possible impact on local groundwater availability and the safety of the water supplied to consumers.

Officials have emphasised the importance of protecting groundwater resources and preventing practices that could pose risks to public health. Water extracted and distributed without appropriate safeguards may carry potential contamination risks, particularly when its source and quality are not properly monitored.

The joint operation reflects efforts by the concerned agencies to address unauthorised groundwater extraction and commercial water distribution. Such enforcement measures are intended to protect natural resources, improve oversight of water supplies and safeguard public health.

HYDRAA’s action near Sunnam Cheruvu highlights the need for stricter monitoring of groundwater extraction and the prevention of illegal activities that could affect the availability and quality of water for residents.
