Hyderabad Rice Mafia Under Scanner: Ration Rice Allegedly Polished and Sold as Premium Branded Rice at ₹100 per kg

Hyderabad Oct 29: A suspected ration rice racket has come under scrutiny in Hyderabad after Civil Supplies and Vigilance officials conducted simultaneous raids on rice depots in the Karmanghat area. The alleged modus operandi involves polishing subsidised ration rice and selling it in the open market as premium-quality branded rice for ₹80 to ₹100 per kg.
Officials said to have collected samples from several rice shops to examine the quality and authenticity of the products. Some shop owners allegedly shut their establishments and fled upon seeing the raiding teams, raising further questions about the suspected racket.
The allegations have brought the spotlight back on the rice mafia, with questions over how subsidised food grains intended for eligible beneficiaries may be diverted, repackaged and sold for profit. If established, the use of reputed corporate brands to market such rice could also raise concerns about food adulteration, misbranding and consumer fraud.
The development comes amid wider public concern over alleged illegal activities, including drug trafficking and food adulteration in Hyderabad.
The authorities are expected to examine the collected samples and investigate the source of the rice, its processing, packaging and distribution channels. Further details about seizures, arrests and the companies whose brands may have been misused have not yet been confirmed.
The key question now is whether the investigation will trace the entire supply chain and identify those responsible, ensuring that subsidised rice meant for the poor does not become a source of illegal profit.
