Hyderabad Police Bust Nepal-Based Gang in Retired IPS Officer’s Wife Murder Case, Four Arrested
The Freedom Press
Hyderabad, October 26: Hyderabad City Police have arrested four members of an alleged Nepal-based international gang in connection with the murder and robbery of Tanuja Ranjan, wife of retired IPS officer Ray Vinay Ranjan, at their residence in Prashasan Nagar under Jubilee Hills police station limits in May this year.
The arrests were made on October 26 near Nampally Railway Station by a joint team of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted to track the Nepal-based gang and Jubilee Hills Police. The accused include a woman who had worked as a domestic help at the victim’s residence. Police also seized ₹51,130 in cash and other incriminating material from them.
According to the police, the incident occurred during the intervening night of May 7 and 8. The victim’s daughter lodged a complaint on May 8 after finding her mother dead in her bedroom with her hands tied and a cloth stuffed into her mouth. The room had been ransacked, wardrobes were broken open, and gold jewellery and other valuables were missing.
Investigators said the accused allegedly entered the house with the help of the domestic worker, overpowered the victim and killed her by suffocation before escaping with approximately 225 grams of gold jewellery and other valuables.
The Jubilee Hills Police, along with Task Force and Central Crime Station teams, initially analysed CCTV footage, call detail records and other technical evidence. On May 22, police arrested Sunil Bahadur Aauji alias Sunil Pariyar and alleged receiver Dilip Bahadur Mijar alias Sonar, recovering 26 grams of the stolen property.
A dedicated SIT was constituted on May 19 to investigate property offences allegedly committed by Nepal-based gangs across Telangana. The team conducted searches in several states, including Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Bihar, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, besides carrying out inquiries along the India-Nepal border.
Police said sustained surveillance, field investigations and intelligence gathering over several months helped them trace the four accused who had allegedly been absconding. The arrested persons were identified as Dharma Tiruwa alias Kalpana, Ganesh B.K. alias Dinesh Thapa, Chandra Bahadur Tamang alias Shanker Chandra Lama and Ganesh Bahadur Shahi.
According to the investigation, Dharma had joined the victim’s household as a domestic worker in June 2025. Police alleged that she subsequently came into contact with members of the gang and shared information about the household, its valuables and the employer’s movements. Investigators said the accused allegedly planned the robbery after learning that the victim’s employer would be away.
The gang members allegedly travelled to Hyderabad from different locations and conducted reconnaissance near the residence before executing the crime. After the murder and robbery, they reportedly escaped through the rear gate, regrouped near Nampally Railway Station and later divided the stolen property among themselves before fleeing to Nepal.
Police said some of the accused had previous criminal cases registered against them in Telangana and other states. During the wider operation, the SIT also executed five pending non-bailable warrants against absconding Nepalese nationals and apprehended another alleged habitual property offender, Jeevan Chand alias Jiban, who was wanted in eight property-related cases across Telangana, Karnataka and Gujarat.
The police further stated that the gang members were allegedly planning similar offences in Bengaluru and Delhi. Their arrests, officials said, helped prevent potential future crimes.
The operation was conducted under the supervision of Vaibhav Raghunath Gaikwad, DCP, Commissioner’s Task Force, and A. Ramana Reddy, DCP, Jubilee Hills. The teams were led by G.S. Daniel, Inspector of Police, SIT, and D. Ashok, Inspector of Police, Jubilee Hills, along with other officers and personnel.
Hyderabad City Police have appealed to residents, apartment associations and gated communities to exercise caution while employing domestic workers, cooks, watchmen and caretakers. They advised employers to verify identity documents, conduct police verification, check previous employment and residence records, and contact former employers and references before hiring staff.
Residents have also been advised to remain alert to suspicious activities, restrict access to sensitive household information and valuables, and ensure that apartment security systems and CCTV cameras remain functional. Suspicious activity can be reported by calling 100 or 112, contacting the Hyderabad City Police WhatsApp helpline at 94906 16555, or approaching the nearest police station.
V.C. Sajjanar, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad City, urged citizens to prioritise preventive measures and cooperate with the police in maintaining public safety.
