Hyderabad May Face Eight-Month Water Crisis; Concerns Grow Over Supply Shortage

Hyderabad, Oct 30: Hyderabad could face a prolonged water shortage over the next eight months as declining water levels in the Manjeera and Singur projects raise concerns over the city’s drinking water supply. The warning has triggered questions about whether the Water Board will be able to maintain uninterrupted supply across the affected areas.

According to Water Board MD Ashok Reddy, seven constituencies in the Hyderabad region could face water-related difficulties. The impact may be particularly severe in Serilingampally, where nearly 80 per cent of the area is estimated to be vulnerable to water shortages. Areas stretching from Patancheru to Jubilee Hills could also experience supply disruptions.

Groundwater depletion and inadequate water storage in the Manjeera and Singur projects have been identified as the major reasons behind the situation. The declining availability of water could place additional pressure on the city’s existing supply network.

However, the actual severity and duration of the shortage will depend on future water availability, rainfall and the measures taken by the authorities. The warning has raised concerns among residents, particularly in areas that may be more vulnerable to supply disruptions.

The Water Board’s response and contingency arrangements will be crucial in preventing the situation from developing into a major crisis.
