Hyderabad Oct 30: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) here on Friday announced to launch its Green Water Tanker programme from November 1 to supply purified wastewater for non-drinking purposes, including industrial use, construction activities, gardening and maintenance of parks and green spaces.
Water Board Managing Director Ashok Reddy asked officials to complete all arrangements by October 31. He issued the instructions during a review meeting held through video conference with executive directors, directors, CGMs, GMs and other senior officials from the Board’s three regions.
The programme is being implemented in accordance with the directions of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, keeping in view the possibility of El Niño conditions and growing pressure on groundwater resources. Ashok Reddy said the reuse of treated wastewater would help conserve groundwater and reduce the consumption of potable water for purposes that do not require drinking-quality water.
During the initial phase, priority will be given to GHMC, other municipal corporations, HMDA, government departments, public parks, road-side greenery and landscaping requirements. Potential users in areas such as the Secretariat, MCRHRD, Durgam Cheruvu, Uppal Stadium, Hi-Tech City and IT institutions will also be identified. Construction companies and industrial establishments will be encouraged to use the treated water in accordance with prescribed quality standards.
The MD instructed officials to establish filling points, pumps and pipelines at every sewage treatment plant (STP). Tankers with capacities of 10,000, 20,000 and 30,000 litres will be registered and provided with Green Water branding. Each tanker must prominently display the warning, “Not for Drinking – For Non-Potable Needs Only.”
Officials informed the meeting that 56 tankers and nine users had been registered so far. The Board aims to increase tanker registrations to 300-400 in the coming days. The booking facility will begin on October 31, with registrations, bookings and deliveries monitored through a Command Control Centre dashboard.
Ashok Reddy appointed STP CGM Padmaja as the nodal officer for monitoring the programme. Officials have been directed to inspect filling stations and conduct trial runs on October 31.
The supply will begin on November 1, with four to five tankers kept ready at each filling point. Special monitoring will be maintained during the first four to five days to ensure smooth operations and address any technical or logistical issues.
