DMK executive committee meets today, major organisational overhaul on agenda

Chennai, Aug 22 (IANS) The DMK executive committee will meet on Saturday amid expectations that the party leadership will unveil a major organisational restructuring following its defeat in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

The proposed revamp is likely to increase the number of DMK district units from the existing 78 to around 110.

Under the plan, each district secretary would be placed in charge of two or three Assembly constituencies, party sources said.

The meeting comes amid growing demands from within the DMK for organisational elections and changes to the party’s existing administrative structure.

The leadership believes that creating smaller district units would make supervision more effective, strengthen the party at the constituency level and improve coordination between functionaries and the headquarters.

The restructuring exercise follows an extensive review of the performance of former ministers and district secretaries during the previous DMK government and the Assembly election campaign.

Reports prepared separately by senior party leaders and the DMK’s political strategy firm, PEN, are learnt to have been submitted to party president M.K. Stalin.

The reports reportedly assessed the performance of incumbents and documented dissatisfaction among grassroots functionaries in several districts.

Based on data and internal feedback, changes have been recommended in a number of district units. The review is also believed to be one of the reasons for the delay in naming new district secretaries.

The leadership is examining whether existing office-bearers should be retained, reassigned or replaced before finalising the reorganised district structure.

The party’s reorganisation committee has reportedly recommended shifting district secretaries aged above 70 to responsibilities at the State or zonal level.

The proposal is intended to retain the experience of senior leaders while creating opportunities for a younger generation of functionaries.

Another proposal being considered is the appointment of youth wing office-bearers as district secretaries.

Party leaders believe that inducting younger functionaries into key organisational positions could energise the cadre and improve the DMK’s outreach among new voters.

A senior leader holding the rank of deputy general secretary has also suggested conducting comprehensive organisational elections, beginning at the branch level and extending up to the party headquarters.

The executive committee is expected to deliberate on these proposals before authorising the leadership to finalise the restructuring.

Any announcement would mark the DMK’s most extensive organisational overhaul in recent years.
