Bengal minister seeks former CM Banerjee’s arrest in RG Kar rape-murder case

Kolkata, Aug 14 (IANS) West Bengal Municipal Affairs & Urban Development Minister, Agnimitra Paul, on Friday demanded the arrest of former West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, in connection with the larger conspiracy behind the rape and murder of a woman junior doctor of state-run R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata, within the hospital premises in August 2024.

“It is clear that Trinamool Congress’ former Chief Whip in the West Bengal Assembly, Nirmal Ghosh, Trinamool Congress councilor from Panihati Municipality, Somanth Dey and Sanjeev Banerjee, a neighbour of the victim’s family, were behind the conspired and hurried cremation of the victim’s body at a crematorium at Panihati.

“Ghosh and Banerjee have already been arrested, while Dey is missing. If Ghosh and Banerjee can be arrested for being part of the bigger conspiracy, why should the former Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, not also be arrested on the same grounds?” questioned Paul, a fashion designer-turned-politician, while speaking to the media persons on Friday afternoon.

She further alleged that the entire action of the former Chief Minister after the recovery of the victim’s body on the morning of August 9, 2024 was suspicious.

“She kept instructing the police from Jharkhand. Why did she allow the post-mortem of the body after 6 p.m., which is generally not the practice? Why did she not order the police to preserve the body?,” she asked.

Agnimitra Paul alleged, “She tried to bribe the victim’s parents through the police so that they would not open their mouths. So, if Nirmal Ghosh had been arrested, I feel that the former Chief Minister should also be arrested for the same reasons.”

Meanwhile, Ghosh, who was arrested from Odisha on Thursday evening, was first brought to the Khardah Police under Barrackpore Police Commissariat on Friday. As he was being taken to the Barrackpore Court from the police station in the afternoon, he faced a massive public outrage.

The local people hurled eggs towards him and some even slapped him. To protect his head Ghosh had quickly put on a helmet. The police somehow escorted him from among the agitated crowd and pushed him into the police van.

Incidentally, Ghosh is the former Trinamool Congress legislator from Panihati Assembly constituency in North 24 Parganas district, where the ancestral house of the victim is located. The current BJP legislator from Panihati is the victim’s mother Ratna Debnath.
