Basheerbagh Name Change Debate in Hyderabad Sparks Controversy Over Alleged Remark by Akula Srivani

Hyderabad Oct 23: A debate over the proposed renaming of Basheerbagh in Hyderabad has sparked controversy following a remark reportedly made by Akula Srivani, which has drawn attention on social media.
The controversy gained momentum after the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi (BGUS) appealed for Basheerbagh to be renamed “Shriram Chowk.” The proposal has triggered discussion over the area’s historical identity and its name.
Basheerbagh derives its name from Basheer Bagh Palace, which was built in 1880 by Asman Jah, a nobleman who served as the Prime Minister of the erstwhile Hyderabad State.
As of now, the proposed renaming should not be treated as an official decision by the Telangana government or the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in the absence of a formal order.
The issue has brought renewed attention to the debate over historical place names and demands for renaming localities in Hyderabad.
