Assam flood: Over 48.5 lakh kg rice distributed; essential supplies maintained, says CM Sarma

Guwahati, Aug 13 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said the state government has maintained an uninterrupted supply of essential food items to flood-affected families since the beginning of the current flood situation, with more than 48.5 lakh kg of rice distributed across the state.

Sharing details of the government’s flood response on social media, CM Sarma said the administration had remained firmly committed to standing with people affected by the floods and ensuring that essential supplies reached them without interruption.

“Never once faltering, never once stepping back when our people need us. Since Day 1, essential food items have been reaching flood affected families across Assam. We will continue to be there, every step of the way,” CM Sarma said in a post on X.

According to the figures shared by the Chief Minister, the state has distributed 48,55,864 kg of rice to flood-affected people since the first day of the relief operation.

The relief distribution has also included 10,15,785 kg of dal, 4,00,794 kg of salt and 1,63,549 litres of mustard oil, highlighting the government’s focus on providing basic food essentials to families displaced or affected by the floods.

The figures indicate that large-scale relief operations have continued across flood-hit areas, with the administration prioritising the availability of staple food and cooking essentials for affected communities.

Assam regularly faces floods during the monsoon due to heavy rainfall, rising water levels in the Brahmaputra and its tributaries and runoff from neighbouring states. Flooding affects thousands of people across several districts every year, damaging homes, agricultural land, roads and other infrastructure.

The state government has been coordinating relief and rehabilitation measures through district administrations and other agencies to ensure supplies reach affected populations.

CM Sarma’s latest statement reiterated the government’s emphasis on sustained assistance to flood victims, particularly in areas where normal life has been disrupted.

The Chief Minister said the government would continue supporting affected families and remain present “every step of the way” until the situation improves.
