Hyderabad, Oct. 26: Kalapathar Police have prevented the marriage of a 17-year-old girl and taken steps to ensure that she continues her education. The intervention followed credible information about a child marriage being conducted at Biryani Shah Tekri within the limits of Kalapathar Police Station on October 2.

Acting on the information, SI Shiva Kumar Reddy, along with Charminar Zone Task Force SI Mahesh and women police personnel, raided the premises and found the minor girl being married to Arif Ali Baig, 42, a resident of Jahanuma in Falaknuma, Hyderabad.

According to the police, the groom is an Indian national who works as a cab driver and is also engaged in rental services in Dubai. Clarifying reports that described him as a “Dubai Sheikh”, police stated that he is an Indian national working in Dubai.

The police immediately intervened and stopped the marriage. The Child Marriage Helpline was informed, and a complaint was received. A case was registered at Kalapathar Police Station under Crime No. 190/2026, invoking Section 10 of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, against the groom, Qazi Mohd. Jahangir, mediator Shaheen and the minor girl’s parents.

Following the intervention, the girl joined a degree college to pursue higher education, the police said. The action was aimed at protecting her rights and ensuring that she could continue her studies instead of being forced into an early marriage.

Kalapathar Police have appealed to the public to promptly report suspected child marriages to the police or the Child Marriage Helpline. They stressed that community cooperation is essential to protect children, prevent child marriages and ensure that every child has the opportunity to pursue education and build a better future.
