Sebashray scam: Kingpin nephew won’t come out of jail’, CM Suvendu warns Abhishek Banerjee (Lead)
Kolkata, July 25 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday launched a sharp attack on Trinamool Congress general secretary and the party’s Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee over the alleged large-scale irregularities at the Sebashray health camps organised in Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas during the previous Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool government.
Speaking on the floor of the West Bengal Assembly on the final day of the six-day extended session, Adhikari addressed the House on the state government’s ongoing probe into the allegations surrounding the Sebashray health camps. Although he did not name Abhishek directly, he repeatedly referred to him as the “mastermind nephew”.
The Chief Minister announced that the state government had decided to conduct separate investigations into the allegations through the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the state police and the state health department.
He claimed that the allegations were extremely serious and warned that if the charges were proved, the “mastermind nephew” would face severe legal consequences.
“Just see what this ‘mastermind nephew’ had done. Complaints have been filed at several police stations. Ultrasonography machines, X-ray machines, doctors from state-run hospitals and medical students from different medical colleges were forcefully and illegally taken to the camps. Are medical students entitled to treat patients? No one can save this ‘nephew’ now. This is a murder case. Machines and expired medicines have been seized from Trinamool Congress legislator Dilip Mandal’s godown,” Adhikari said.
“Detailed investigation into the matter will be conducted by the CID and medical experts. There is no scope for sparing the ‘nephew’ and his companions,” the Chief Minister added.
Adhikari also read out a letter purportedly written by a doctor alleging corruption and irregularities in the functioning of the Sebashray health camps during the previous regime. He further displayed photographs of patients who allegedly lost their hands or legs after receiving treatment at the camps.
At the time of filing this report, there was no response from Abhishek Banerjee or any leader of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress faction to the Chief Minister’s allegations.
In another development, the police on Saturday registered a fresh FIR against Abhishek Banerjee and his absconding personal assistant, Sumit Roy, in connection with the alleged Sebashray health camp scam.
Referring to Friday’s violence during a joint rally organised by the students’ and youth wings of various Left parties and the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), Adhikari said those found guilty of attacking police personnel and media persons would face action under the newly enacted West Bengal Public Safety & Control of Anti-Social Activities Act, 2026, which contains stricter provisions to curb anti-social activities and corruption in the state.
