Women’s Reservation Bill a milestone for empowerment under PM Modi: UP Dy CM Maurya

Lucknow, April 9 (IANS) Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister, Keshav Prasad Maurya, on Thursday welcomed the Women’s Reservation Bill, calling it a historic move made possible under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a major boost to women’s empowerment in the country.

The Centre has planned to introduce amendments to the Nari Shakti Vandan Act (Women Reservation Act) during the upcoming three-day special session of Parliament.

On April 16, Parliament will be convened to discuss and pass the crucial Bill that advances women’s reservation.

Speaking to media in Lucknow, Maurya said that the proposed Bill seeking reservation for women in Parliament and state legislative Assemblies has brought “waves of happiness” among women, who constitute nearly half of the country’s population. He added that preparations for the implementation of the legislation once it is passed are already generating optimism and enthusiasm across the nation.

“I welcome and appreciate this Bill. The preparations for its implementation have brought waves of happiness among half of the country’s population (women). The entire nation sincerely thanks the Prime Minister for this,” Maurya said.

He further expressed confidence that the ongoing efforts towards women’s empowerment would prove to be a milestone in the coming years. According to him, the present government has taken unprecedented steps in ensuring greater participation of women in governance and decision-making processes.

Praising the Prime Minister’s initiatives, Maurya said that no government in the past had done as much for women’s empowerment. “Honourable Prime Minister has done more work for women empowerment than has ever been done in history, and it is unlikely that anyone will be able to do as much in the future. He has done the most and the best work in the direction of women empowerment. He has worked to make women self-reliant and independent,” he stated.

The Deputy Chief Minister emphasised that policies aimed at making women self-reliant and financially independent are crucial for the country’s holistic development, and the reservation law would further strengthen this objective by ensuring their adequate representation in legislative bodies.

Commenting on the ongoing polling in three states, Maurya urged citizens to actively participate in the democratic process. He said that exercising the right to vote is essential for strengthening democracy and shaping the future of the nation.

“There are elections in three states. We appeal to the people to exercise their right to vote. Use of voting right is for the strengthening of democracy,” he said.

Maurya also expressed confidence in the BJP’s electoral prospects, stating that the party is set to form the government in Assam for a third-consecutive term. He added that the BJP is poised to deliver a historic performance in Kerala and that the NDA would return to power in Puducherry.
