Vedanta Power slips into Rs 423-crore loss in Q1

Mumbai, July 29 (IANS) Vedanta Power Limited on Wednesday reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 423 crore for the first quarter of FY27, weighed down by a sharp rise in exceptional losses.

The company’s consolidated revenue from operations stood at Rs 2,595 crore in the quarter ended June 30, 2026, compared with Rs 1,981 crore in the corresponding quarter last financial year (Q1 FY26), according to its stock exchange filing.

However, revenue declined sequentially from Rs 2,670 crore reported in the January-March quarter of FY26.

Total consolidated income for the quarter came in at Rs 2,616 crore, while total expenses increased to Rs 2,737 crore from Rs 2,503 crore in the preceding quarter, as per its regulatory filing.

Vedanta Power reported a net exceptional loss of Rs 487 crore during the quarter, significantly higher than the exceptional loss of Rs 45 crore recorded in the previous quarter. There were no exceptional items in the year-ago period.

The company’s operating performance also weakened during the quarter, with consolidated earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) declining to Rs 291 crore from Rs 594 crore in the preceding quarter and Rs 417 crore in the year-ago period.

Basic and diluted earnings per share (EPS) stood at a negative Rs 1.08 for the quarter, compared with a positive Rs 0.36 in the previous quarter and Rs 0.23 in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year.

The company said the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) approved the scheme for the demerger of the Merchant Power Undertaking of Vedanta Limited into Vedanta Power on January 9, 2026.

The scheme became effective on May 1, 2026, following which the company issued 391.04 crore equity shares to the shareholders of Vedanta Limited.

Vedanta Power also disclosed that the Supreme Court imposed a penalty on the company in May 2026 over the alleged mis-declaration of declared capacity.

During the quarter, the company recognised an exceptional loss of Rs 127 crore, along with the applicable late payment surcharge, in connection with the penalty.
