Man murders sister-in-law with axe in Bengal’s Malda

Kolkata, Sep 6 (IANS) A man who allegedly murdered his sister-in-law with an axe in West Bengal’s Malda district has been arrested, police said on Sunday.

The incident took place in the Harishchandrapur area in Malda late on Saturday.

The deceased woman has been identified as Amrita Oraon, 27, a resident of the Ramnagar Baisa area of Harishchandrapur.

According to local sources, Amrita was cooking at home on Saturday night, when her brother-in-law, Panchu Oraon, suddenly came there, attacked her with an axe, and fled the scene. According to family sources, her husband Nandalal Oraon was not at home at the time of the incident, and their two children were playing elsewhere in the house.

Other family members rushed after hearing Amrita’s screams. Neighbours also gathered at their house following the commotion.

Amrita, who was in all covered in blood, was taken to the hospital, where doctors examined her and declared her dead.

On receiving the information, Chanchal Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Somnath Saha, Harishchandrapur Police Station Inspector-in-Charge (IC) Sumit Kumar Ghosh, and other police officers reached the spot. After receiving the complaint from the family members, the police started searching for Panchu Oraon. Within a short time, he was caught and taken to the police station. Later, he was officially arrested.

The incident has created a sensation in the area. The question has arisen as to why Panchu Oraon killed his sister-in-law in this way. The police have started investigating whether there was a family dispute or some other reason behind the incident. The theory of an extramarital affair came up during the initial questioning of family members and neighbours.

Police initially suspect that Amrita Oraon was involved in an extramarital affair with her brother-in-law. However, she had been avoiding him for some time, and investigators surmise that Panchu Oraon attacked her out of suspicion that she had become involved with someone else. The police are also examining whether there might be any other motive behind the murder. The police will seek his custody for further interrogation after producing him in court.
