Bhopal, March 4 (IANS) Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Tuesday said that the Madhya Pradesh government is progressing towards an agreement with Maharashtra regarding the Tapti Basin Mega Recharge project.
The Chief Minister said that discussions with the Maharashtra government are in progress and all hurdles have been resolved through multiple rounds of meetings between senior officials from both the neighboring states.
The Chief Minister made this statement during an interaction with the farmers who came to meet from Burhanpur under the leadership of former Minister and MLA Burhanpur Archana Chitnis at the Chief Minister’s Office on Tuesday.
The Tapti Basin Mega Recharge project is expected to utilise a total of 31.13 thousand million cubic (TMC) feet of water, with 11.76 TMC allocated to Madhya Pradesh and 19.36 TMC to Maharashtra. It will need 3,362 hectares of land in Madhya Pradesh for the construction of dams and canals.
The government is actively working to resolve long-pending water-sharing issues, ensuring that farmers as well as industries get enough water.
Upon completion of the Tapti project, a permanent irrigation facility will be established, benefiting 1,23,082 hectares of land in Madhya Pradesh and 2,34,706 hectares in Maharashtra.
The project will specifically benefit four tehsils in Madhya Pradesh, including Burhanpur, Nepanagar, Khaknar and Khalwa in the Burhanpur and Khandwa districts, according to the state government’s statement issued earlier.
Besides supplying water to Maharashtra’s northern region and Madhya Pradesh’s southern areas, the project is also aimed at addressing drinking water concerns in Nagpur, Maharashtra, and irrigation needs in Chhindwara.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav had earlier stated that he had spoken to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and he was also keen on making concrete efforts to resolve the issues related to the long-pending Tapti and Kanhan river water projects in collaboration with MP.
