Humayun Kabir’s son files nomination for Rejinagar bypoll; father seeks support from all non-BJP parties for his son

Kolkata, Sep 9 (IANS) Gulam Nabi Azad, the son of former Trinamool Congress legislator Humayun Kabir, who is currently the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) legislator, on Wednesday, filed nomination as an AJUP candidate from Rejinagar Assembly constituency in minority-dominated Murshidabad district of West Bengal, which is going for bypolls on October 6.

In the recently-concluded West Bengal Assembly polls, Kabir got elected simultaneously from Naoda and Rejinagar Assembly constituencies, both in Murshidabad district. However, he decided to retain the Naoda constituency, which necessitated the bypoll for Rejinagar.

Earlier in the day, Kabir while indirectly seeking support for his son, called for unity among all parties in the state, including all factions of the Trinamool Congress, CPI(M)-led Left Front, Congress and All India Secular Front (AISF) and urged them to field a single united Opposition candidate against the BJP for the Rejinagar bypolls.

“Out of 294 seats in the state, the Opposition has won 86 seats. Of these, 80 are from the Trinamool Congress, two are from the Congress, one from the CPI(M), one from AISF and I am from AJUP. If these 86 MLAs forget their ego and unite against the BJP, then it is possible to stop BJP even in 2026,” Kabir said.

After filing the nomination, Azad spoke in a different note while talking to media persons. “My principal opponent in the Rejinagar bypoll is the BJP, which also was in the Assembly polls last year. I do not think that any other party will be of any factor in the Rejinagar bypoll,” Azad said.

He also said that he is cent per cent confident of his victory in the bypoll.

“I am 100 per cent optimistic about my victory. My father won from the Rejinagar constituency in the Assembly elections earlier this year. We have been in politics here for a long time. I was with the people of Rejinagar and I am still with them. The people of Rejinagar will be with me. There will be no celebrities in the campaign. Only the regional and booth leadership will be in the campaign. Of course, my father will be there,” Azad said.

Besides, Rejinagar, the Nandigram Assembly constituency in East Midnapore district is also going for bypoll on October 6.

The current West Bengal Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari got elected simultaneously from Nandigram and Bhabanipur Assembly constituency in South Kolkata.

At Bhabanipur, he defeated his predecessor and former West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee by a margin of over 15,000 votes. Later he retained Bhabanipur, which necessitated the bypoll for Nandigram.
