Congress veterans demand removal of MP Minister Vijay Shah over remarks on Army officer
Bhopal, Aug 27 (IANS) The Madhya Pradesh Congress veterans’ wing has strongly condemned Tribal Affairs Minister Vijay Shah’s controversial remarks about Indian Army officer Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and demanded his immediate removal from the cabinet along with strict legal action against him.
In a press conference, Veterans described the alleged comments as an insult not only to a serving military officer but also to the honour of the Indian Army and its soldiers. They called upon both the Central and state governments to take firm steps against the minister.
The Veterans wing president, Major Gen. (Retd) Shyam Shrivastava, said at a press conference that the statement triggered widespread outrage across the country and drew protests from various quarters.
At a time when the nation was lauding the Indian Army’s valour during “Operation Sindoor,” the remarks were termed extremely unfortunate and condemnable. He noted that the Madhya Pradesh High Court had taken suo motu cognisance of the matter and ordered the registration of an FIR against Shah.
Despite the FIR and subsequent directions from the Supreme Court on investigation and necessary action, the follow-up has been unsatisfactory, disappointing veterans and the public, he said.
Anger has intensified after the Madhya Pradesh Cabinet, in a recent meeting, reportedly decided not to grant sanction for Shah’s prosecution and extended political support to him.
The veterans department expressed strong displeasure over the decision to retain the minister in the cabinet, arguing that it sends a wrong message on a sensitive issue concerning the armed forces.
“The Indian Army does not belong to any political party but to the entire nation,” he asserted.
The retired officer further said derogatory remarks against any Army officer or soldier amount to disrespect towards the sentiments of millions of citizens and the sacrifices made by soldiers. Respect for the Army and its officers, he maintained, must remain above politics.
He said they have (Veterans) demanded an impartial investigation and appropriate action in accordance with the law. They have also warned of launching a democratic and peaceful street movement if timely action is not taken to protect the dignity of the Indian Army and the honour of veterans.
In such an eventuality, he warned, the government would be held responsible. The controversy stems from remarks Shah is alleged to have made at a public meeting in Mhow, near Indore, on May 13, 2025.
