Bengal: BJP leaders meet family members of former Dy Speaker after suicide

Kolkata, Aug 17 (IANS) Leaders from the West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday met the family members of former Trinamool Congress legislator Asish Banerjee, who reportedly committed suicide on Sunday.
Banerjee, who served as West Bengal Agriculture Minister in the previous Mamata Banerjee‑led Trinamool Congress government and was also Deputy Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly, was found dead at his residence in Birbhum district.
His body was recovered from a party office room on Sunday morning, along with a suicide note.
On Monday, a forensic team visited the residence and collected specimens from the room where the body was found. The room was sealed with tape, and no one was allowed to enter during the investigation.
According to district police insiders, the initial autopsy report supports the theory of suicide, though investigators have not made any official comment. Police are probing the reasons and circumstances behind the incident.
BJP’s Birbhum district president Uday Shankar Banerjee, Rampurhat MLA Dhruba Saha, Sainthia MLA Krishna Kanta Saha and Birbhum district Mahila Morcha president Rashmi Dey visited the residence of the deceased leader and interacted with his family members.
They spoke with Banerjee’s son, Shatadal Banerjee, and later met his wife and other relatives. All expressed grief over the sudden death of the Trinamool leader.
Dhruba Saha, who defeated Banerjee in the recent West Bengal assembly elections, conveyed condolences and assured the family of support. Incidentally, Saha was once a student of Banerjee, who was a college teacher by profession.
The forensic experts collected samples from the sealed room and left without answering media queries.
