Assam’s bamboo economy creating jobs, boosting entrepreneurship: Himanta Sarma
Guwahati, Sep 18 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Friday highlighted the growing role of bamboo in creating employment opportunities, promoting entrepreneurship and supporting sustainable economic development across the state on the occasion of World Bamboo Day.
In a post on X, Sarma said bamboo was emerging as an important resource for Assam, contributing to the development of new industries and generating opportunities for people across different sectors.
“From everyday products to new industries, Assam’s bamboo is creating new opportunities for our people,” the Chief Minister said.
Marking World Bamboo Day, Sarma emphasised the contribution of bamboo to skill development, livelihoods and entrepreneurship, while underlining its potential to support sustainable growth in the state.
“On World Bamboo Day, we celebrate how bamboo is driving skills, livelihoods, entrepreneurship and new avenues for sustainable growth across Assam,” he posted.
The Chief Minister’s remarks come amid efforts to promote the economic potential of bamboo, a widely available natural resource in Assam and other parts of the Northeast.
Bamboo has applications across several sectors, including handicrafts, furniture, construction, food processing and other value-added products.
Its use in diverse industries offers opportunities for local artisans, entrepreneurs and communities to develop new sources of income.
The promotion of bamboo-based enterprises can also support value addition, enabling producers to move beyond the sale of raw materials and explore finished products with greater commercial potential.
Assam’s rich natural resources and traditional knowledge associated with bamboo provide a foundation for developing businesses that connect local skills with emerging market opportunities.
Sarma’s World Bamboo Day message focussed on the role of the sector in strengthening livelihoods and encouraging sustainable economic activity.
The Chief Minister also underlined the wider significance of bamboo-driven growth, linking the resource to skills, entrepreneurship and new avenues of opportunity for the people of Assam.
