The Freedom Press

Prayagraj, October 29: A dispute with a neighbour reportedly led to the discovery of a large quantity of cash allegedly buried in three drums inside a house in Baraipur Ramanagar village under Nawabganj police station limits in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj district. Police teams reportedly recovered bundles of Rs 500 notes during a raid on Wednesday evening.

According to preliminary reports, the cash was estimated to exceed Rs 5 crore, while claims circulating locally put the amount as high as Rs 60 crore. The exact amount was yet to be officially confirmed, as the counting process was underway.

The house reportedly belongs to Rakesh Yadav, alias Mahakaal. Acting on a tip-off, a team led by DCP Ganganagar Sonam Kumar and an Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police raided the premises. More than 40 police personnel reportedly cordoned off the house before digging operations began.

Four people were reportedly taken into custody for questioning, and the house was sealed. Income Tax officials were said to be using counting machines to assess the recovered cash and establish its source.

According to local accounts, the house owner had previously worked in Pune and returned to his village during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown. Residents reportedly noticed a sudden change in his financial circumstances, including land purchases and the acquisition of tractors.

The alleged cash recovery came to light after a dispute with a neighbour, whose information reportedly drew the attention of the authorities to the property.

Officials are expected to establish the exact amount recovered, the source of the money and whether any financial irregularities were involved. The claims regarding the total cash and the circumstances surrounding its concealment could not be independently verified at the time of publication.
