Stalin targets TVK after arrest of party district functionary in ₹270 cr drug seizure

Chennai, Oct 17 (IANS) DMK leader M.K. Stalin attacked the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) following the arrest of its Nagapattinam district functionary Boobalan in a drug trafficking case involving 135 kg of methamphetamine, allegedly valued at Rs 270 crore and intended for smuggling to Sri Lanka.
In a post on X, Stalin invoked the television crime series ‘Breaking Bad’ to ridicule TVK and questioned Chief Minister Vijay’s statements against narcotics.
He demanded a comprehensive investigation into the network behind the consignment.
Stalin identified Boobalan as a district executive committee member who had handled election responsibilities for the Kilvelur Assembly constituency.
He questioned how someone facing allegations involving a substantial narcotics consignment had held organisational responsibilities within the ruling party.
The DMK leader argued that the seizure warranted an investigation extending beyond those immediately implicated.
Investigators should establish the source of the drugs, identify the intended recipients and uncover everyone connected to the alleged trafficking operation, he said.
Using references to characters associated with Vijay’s films, Stalin urged the ruling party to scrutinise its district organisations.
He also criticised the government’s priorities during its first five months in office and said the Chief Minister should address the allegations seriously.
The case emerged after a five-member Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) team searched the residence of Boobalan, a 42-year-old advocate, at Chinthamani in Keezhapidagai village in Nagapattinam district from 7 a.m. on Friday.
Officials questioned him in connection with methamphetamine trafficking. DRI personnel also searched residences belonging to his friends in Prathabaramapuram.
During the operation, officials seized 135 kg of methamphetamine from the house of J. Sugan. Sugan, 27, his brother J. Parthiban, 29, and D. Sathish, 30, were detained for questioning.
Boobalan was arrested in connection with the case. The suspects were taken to the Nagapattinam Customs office for further questioning about the consignment and its alleged movement.
Boobalan had served as TVK’s in-charge for the Kilvelur Assembly constituency during the 2026 Assembly elections, besides being a member of the party’s Nagapattinam district executive committee.
Following his arrest, TVK district secretary M. Sugumaran issued a statement announcing Boobalan’s removal from all responsibilities and positions in the party.
The investigation concerns the alleged trafficking operation, while Stalin’s remarks have brought political scrutiny to Boobalan’s party role. The precise involvement of each suspect remains subject to investigation.
