Congress MP Bimol Akoijam arrives in Delhi to join probe in sexual harassment case

New Delhi, Oct 15 (IANS) Congress MP and sacked Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, who is accused in the alleged sexual exploitation of students at the varsity, arrived at the Vasant Kunj North police station here on Thursday in response to police summons, describing the turn of events as a “political matter”.

He stated that he had been summoned by the Delhi Police to join the investigation and had come to cooperate with it.

Sharing his experience in Delhi, the Congress MP said he felt as though he had arrived in an “inimical place.”

“I do not feel a sense of belonging here at all; I am more attached to Manipur now, thanks to what is happening. I have come to cooperate with the investigation following the Delhi Police’s summons,” he said.

Akoijam noted that while his schedule is quite busy, he did not want his absence to be misinterpreted as a lack of cooperation with the investigation. To avoid such perceptions, he decided to appear before the Delhi Police. He emphasised that the law should be allowed to take its course.

Likening the JNU administration’s decision to sack him to that of “Khap Panchayat”, he said: “I hope it won’t be repeated here.”

Moreover, Akoijam described the entire affair as a “political matter from the beginning”.

Hoping that truth will prevail, he said: “This is Mahatma Gandhi’s land, Satyamev Jayate!”

Meanwhile, earlier on Thursday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Mahila Morcha met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and submitted a memorandum seeking stringent action against the Congress MP over sexual harassment complaints filed by 11 female JNU students against him.

The delegation, led by BJP Mahila Morcha National President Rupkumari Choudhary, urged Birla to take cognisance of the matter and ensure swift and impartial action without any political interference, New Delhi MP Bansuri Swaraj told reporters after the meeting.

Chaudhary said that everyone has seen how Congress leaders have been mistreating women in recent days.
