Greater Noida: Three, including woman, held for duping people with fake gold ornaments

Greater Noida, Sep 12 (IANS) A Bisrakh police team in Greater Noida on Saturday busted a gang allegedly involved in cheating people of lakhs of rupees by showing them fake gold ornaments and arrested three persons, including a woman.

The police have recovered Rs 1.20 lakh in cash and a gold-chain ornament allegedly linked to the cheating incident from the accused.

Two fixed deposits (FDs) of Rs 2 lakh each belonging to the accused have also been frozen.

According to the police, the accused posed as labourers and lured victims by claiming that they had found gold and silver during excavation. They would then gain the victim’s confidence before offering to sell the allegedly discovered jewellery at a much lower price.

The case came to light after a complaint was lodged at Bisrakh police station.

The complainant alleged that two unidentified men and a woman had duped his father by handing him a bag containing fake gold ornaments and taking lakhs of rupees from him.

To crack the case, police used local intelligence and analysed CCTV footage from the area.

During the investigation, they gathered crucial leads about the suspects and subsequently arrested all three from the road leading from Char Murti towards ATS Roundabout on September 12.

The accused have been identified as Mani, a woman aged around 40, Mohan, 43, and Dharma, 45.

Mani and Mohan are originally residents of JJ Colony in Delhi’s Uttam Nagar and were currently staying in Purana Haibatpur village under Bisrakh police station limits.

Dharma, a resident of Bhagirathi Vihar in Delhi’s Bhajanpura was also staying in Purana Haibatpur.

During interrogation, the accused allegedly revealed their modus operandi. They would introduce themselves as labourers and approach unsuspecting people, claiming that they had found gold or silver while carrying out excavation work.

After gaining the victim’s confidence, they would take one or two days before showing fake gold or silver ornaments. They would then offer to sell the ornaments at a fraction of their market value, exploiting the victim’s desire to buy gold at a cheap price.

Once the victim agreed to the deal and handed over the money, the accused would give them fake ornaments and flee.

Police are now questioning the accused to ascertain how many similar incidents they have committed in the past and identify other members who may be involved in the gang.
