Chennai, Sep 7 (IANS) Tamil Nadu’s wind power generation increased by 3.31 per cent during the first five months of the current financial year, as a sharp recovery in July and August offset a weak start to the wind season.
The state generated 10,446 million units of wind energy between April 1 and August 31, compared with 10,112 million units during the corresponding period in 2025, according to data from the Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited.
Output had remained below last year’s levels throughout the April-June quarter. Generation declined by 7.8 per cent in April, 27.2 per cent in May, and 22.2 per cent in June.
The combined output for these three months was 3,601.4 million units, down about 22.7 per cent from the 4,658.2 million units recorded during the same period a year earlier.
The situation changed in July as stronger winds lifted production to 3,401 million units, against 3,045 million units in July 2025. This represented an increase of 11 per cent. The recovery gathered momentum in August, when generation reached 3,444 million units, up almost 43 per cent from 2,408 million units in the corresponding month last year.
Wind energy production crossed 100 million units on several days in July and remained robust for much of August.
Daily generation touched a record 142.430 million units in August, exceeding the previous high of 123.8 million units registered in August 2025.
The new peak underlined the strong contribution of wind power to the state’s electricity supply during the period.
Together, July and August produced 6,845 million units this year, marking a 25.5 per cent rise over the 5,453 million units generated in the same two months of 2025. This late-season surge proved crucial in pushing the overall five-month figure above last year’s level.
Renewable-energy producers have urged the state green energy corporation to introduce a policy that would make it easier to add new wind and solar capacity. They said expansion should not be delayed until a separate policy for battery energy storage systems is finalised. A framework, they added, could help Tamil Nadu build on the improved generation figures and strengthen the contribution of renewable sources to its power network.
