Srinagar, Sep 3 (IANS) J&K Police on Thursday attached several properties belonging to the banned Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) organisation in Sopore sub-division of Baramulla district.
Police said that two double-storeyed buildings, six shops, and two kanals of land at Sopore’s Dooru area, linked to the proscribed organisation, were attached following completion of legal proceedings under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UA (P) Act).
The action stems from FIR No. 42/2025 registered at Police Station Sopore under Sections 10 and 13 of the UA(P) Act. The properties, comprising the premises of the closed Islamia Model School, Dooru, were notified under Section 8(1) of the UA(P) Act by the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, on August 12.
Subsequently, the District Magistrate, Baramulla, issued orders under Sections 8(3) and 8(4), following which Sopore Police, along with an Executive Magistrate, carried out the attachment in accordance with law.
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) banned Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir (JeI) as an unlawful association under the UA(P) Act, first in February 2019 and extended it for another five years in February 2024.
The JeI was declared an unlawful association under Section 3(1) of the Act.
The government stated the organisation continues to foment terrorism, spread anti-India propaganda, fuel secessionism, and support terror groups like Hizbul Mujahideen.
In 1987, JeI fought state assembly elections in J&K as part of the Muslim United Front (MuF). One of its senior-most leaders, Mohammad Yusuf Shah, fought elections against the National Conference (NC) candidate from Amira Kadal constituency of Srinagar district.
The seat was won by the NC candidate, but the MuF alleged large-scale bungling in those elections. Yusuf Shah later became the supreme commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen terror outfit under the codename of Syed Sallahudfin. He is presently in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
