Man critical after home-invasion stabbing in Australia

Sydney, Aug 25 (IANS) A man has been hospitalised with critical injuries after he was stabbed by a group of people who tried to break into his home in the Australian state of Queensland in the early hours of Tuesday.

The Queensland Police Service said that a group of armed people attempted to break into a property in Victoria Point, 30 km east of Brisbane, around 1:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday when they were confronted by a resident.

The resident, a 46-year-old man, was stabbed several times before the group fled the scene, reports Xinhua news agency.

He was subsequently taken to hospital in a critical but stable condition.

Police said investigations are underway to determine whether the attack was targeted and asked anyone with information or footage to come forward.

In a separate incident last week, a teenage boy has been hospitalised after he was stabbed at a western Sydney school on August 20.

Police said that emergency services were called to reports that a 14-year-old boy had been injured at a school in Granville, 18 km west of central Sydney, around 10:15 a.m. local time.

Officers arrived and were told that the boy suffered a cut to his abdomen. He was treated at the scene by ambulance paramedics before being taken to the hospital in a stable condition.

A second 14-year-old boy was subsequently arrested, and a knife was seized for examination.

The police statement said that officers remained on scene working with staff and all other students were reported to be safe. It said that officers were waiting to speak to everyone involved.

Sydney newspaper the Daily Telegraph reported that the incident triggered a lockdown at the school.
