Rajasthan: CISF jawan dies of gunshot at Rawatbhata, probe underway

Jaipur, Aug 22 (IANS) A Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) jawan deployed at the Rajasthan Atomic Power Station in Rawatbhata, Chittorgarh, died after sustaining a gunshot wound while on duty on Saturday. Police are investigating the circumstances from all angles.

According to preliminary reports, the sound of gunfire was heard, triggering panic among security personnel. When colleagues reached the duty post outside the reactor building of Units 3 and 4, they found 25‑year‑old Pramir Sarkar lying on the floor with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was rushed to the nuclear power plant hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His body has been kept in the mortuary, and a post‑mortem examination will be conducted after his family arrives from West Bengal.

The CISF Commandant, Deputy Commandant and Rawatbhata police reached the site and began an investigation. Officials are examining the incident from multiple angles to determine how the weapon was discharged. Rawatbhata SHO Sanjeev Swami confirmed that the jawan was found dead at his duty post with a gunshot injury.

Police said Sarkar was carrying an INSAS rifle, which was involved in the incident. However, the exact circumstances surrounding the firing have not yet been established. CISF officials also indicated uncertainty over whether the shot was fired from Sarkar’s service rifle and how the incident occurred. The investigation and post‑mortem examination are expected to provide further clarity.

The deceased jawan’s family in West Bengal has been informed. Sarkar joined the CISF in 2025 and had been posted in Rawatbhata about six months ago. On Friday night, he was assigned security duty at the reactor building during the 8:30 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. shift. He sustained the fatal gunshot wound approximately half an hour before his shift was scheduled to end.

Police and security agencies are continuing to investigate the circumstances of his death. The exact cause will be established after completion of the investigation and post‑mortem examination.
