Trinamool Congress youth leader arrested in Kolkata for beating up BJP worker
Kolkata, Aug 8 (IANS) A Trinamool Congress youth leader has been arrested for allegedly beating up a BJP worker and molesting his mother in south Kolkata’s Bhowanipur area, said the police on Saturday.
The police took action within 24 hours of receiving the complaint. The Bhowanipur police are investigating the reason for this incident. The arrested Trinamool youth leader will be produced before Alipore court later in the day.
According to the police, the name of the arrested person is Sandeep Shaw. Sandeep is the president of the Youth Trinamool of ward number 73 in Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) area.
The BJP worker filed a written complaint in Bhowanipur police station last Thursday. The BJP worker alleged that Sandeep had attacked him and severely beaten him up. He even accused Sandeep of molesting his mother after she came to rescue him. On Thursday, the Bhabanipur police registered an FIR based on the complaint. Then the police started investigating the matter.
The police arrested the accused youth leader on Friday evening. The police are investigating whether anyone else is behind the incident and the reason for this incident. According to a senior officer, the police will seek his custody to interrogate him further in this case.
“The youth leader has been arrested after receiving a complaint against. An FIR under relevant sections has been registered against him. He will be produced in the court today. Further details will be shared later,” said a senior officer of Kolkata Police.
It may be noted that since the BJP formed a government in the state after defeating the Trinamool Congress, there has been a crackdown on illegal and criminal activities of Trinamool Congress leaders.
The police have been active in taking action against anti-social elements and often acting against Trinamool Congress leaders and councillors against whom allegations of breaking the law were raised.
Several Trinamool councillors have been arrested as part of the police action across the state. In Kolkata Municipal Corporation area, more than 12 Trinamool councillors have been arrested on charges of corruption, extortion, molestation.
