Delhi: Man arrested with illegal Beretta pistol; four live cartridges, two magazines in Shahdara

New Delhi, Aug 8 (IANS) A 30-year-old man was arrested by the Farsh Bazar Police in Delhi’s Shahdara district for possessing an illegal Beretta pistol, four live cartridges, and two magazines, officials said on Saturday.

According to the police, the arrest was made on August 6 during a routine patrolling operation carried out by a dedicated team from Police Station Farsh Bazar as part of preventive measures against crime and illegal activities in the area.

While patrolling near New Sadak Road, close to Guru Gobind Singh University, the police team received specific information from a reliable source that a man carrying an illegal firearm would be travelling in a white-coloured car from the Vivek Vihar side towards Bhikam Singh Colony between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Acting on the information, the police team immediately set up a strategic checking point at the indicated location and began monitoring vehicles passing through the area.

At the specified time, a white car approaching from the Vivek Vihar side was intercepted by the police. The driver was subjected to a personal search, during which an illegal Beretta pistol, reportedly made in Italy, was recovered from his possession.

The police subsequently conducted a detailed search of the vehicle and recovered two additional live cartridges and two magazines from the dashboard. In total, four live .32-calibre cartridges and two magazines were seized along with the firearm.

The accused was identified as Raj Singh, a resident of B-2 Block, Gali No. 26, Harsh Vihar, Delhi. He is 30 years old.

Following the recovery, the police registered FIR No. 283/26 dated August 6, under Section 25 of the Arms Act at Police Station Farsh Bazar.

During interrogation, the accused allegedly disclosed that he had kept the firearm as a hobby and to show off. Police officials said further investigation is underway to ascertain the source of the weapon, the circumstances under which it was procured, and whether the accused has links with any individuals involved in the illegal arms trade or other criminal activities.

The operation was conducted under the leadership of the Station House Officer (SHO) of Farsh Bazar Police Station and under the close supervision of the ACP, Shahdara, and overall supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Shahdara.

The police team involved in the operation included Head Constables Avneesh, who is the investigating officer in the case, Sachin, Amit Kumar, Diwakar, and Amit Malik, along with Constables Tarun and Ashish.

Police officials said the successful apprehension of the accused highlights the alertness and proactive approach of the Farsh Bazar police team during preventive patrolling. The timely action not only prevented the possible misuse of the illegal firearm but also enabled investigators to probe the source and supply chain of the weapon.
