Himachal CM launches first phase of Chinar plantation drive

Shimla, June 5 (IANS) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister, Sukhvinder Sukhu, on Friday launched the first phase of the Chinar plantation drive from his official residence, Oak Over, here on the occasion of World Environment Day.

The initiative aims to enhance green cover and promote greater public awareness about environmental conservation.

Known for its majestic appearance, dense shade and ecological significance, the Chinar tree is well-suited to Shimla’s climatic conditions.

On the occasion of World Environment Day, the Chief Minister also released four publications related to forestry, environmental management and eco-tourism.

These were Van Bodh, a field handbook prepared for frontline forest personnel, Environmental Management and Regulations, authored by head of Forest Force, Dr. Sanjay Sood, Forestry Projects: Forest Conservation, Livelihood Improvement and Integrated Development, highlighting works being undertaken under the JICA, KfW and IDP projects and a Coffee Table Book on 75 Ecotourism Sites of Himachal Pradesh, showcasing the state’s prominent eco-tourism destinations.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Sukhu said that these publications would serve as valuable resources for forest officials and staff, researchers, policymakers and all those interested in environmental conservation.

He expressed confidence that the books would contribute to expanding knowledge and awareness in the fields of forest management, biodiversity conservation and eco-tourism.

He said the younger generation has a pivotal role to play in environmental conservation.

Describing the youth as the future of the nation, he urged them to take the lead in protecting and preserving the environment and contribute actively towards building a greener and more sustainable future.

He also presented saplings to students of a Shimla government school and ‘Children of the State’ as part of the World Environment Day celebrations.

MLAs Vinod Sultanpuri, Sudarshan Babloo and Hardeep Bawa, local Mayor Surinder Chauhan, Vice-Chairman of the H.P. State Forest Development Corporation, K.S. Khachi, General Secretary of the state Congress, Vinod Zinta, Chief Secretary K.K. Pant, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Sanjay Sood and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
