Three killed as truck falls in canal in MP’s Satna

Satna, April 22 (IANS) Three persons were killed in a road accident early Wednesday morning after a speeding truck lost control and plunged into a canal near the Nemua intersection on National Highway-39 in Madhya Pradesh’s Satna district, police officials said.
The truck, loaded with steel reinforcement bars, smashed through the road divider before crashing into the canal, leaving the vehicle mangled beyond recognition.
The driver, a cleaner, and a labourer were trapped inside the cabin and died instantly at the site.
According to police officials, the truck was driven at a high speed, which likely caused the driver to lose control.
Police have identified two of the deceased as Dilip Kewat, son of Rajesh Kewat from Padri village in Maihar district; and Vishnu Kewat, son of Makhanlal Kewat from Ramgarh in Maihar district.
Efforts are underway to identify the third victim.
The accident was reported by passersby, prompting police team to rush to the site.
A rescue operation was immediately launched, but the severity of the crash made recovery extremely difficult.
With the help of a crane, the truck was lifted from the canal, and two bodies were recovered.
The third body, however, was wedged tightly within the wreckage, requiring cutting tools to dismantle parts of the truck’s chassis.
“The rescue operation lasted nearly four hours, with police and local residents working together to retrieve the victims,” police officials said.
The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, while preliminary investigations suggest loss of control due to overspeeding as the primary cause.
Authorities are also examining other possibilities, including driver negligence, drowsiness, or mechanical failure.
The accident has cast a pall of gloom over the villages of the deceased, where families and communities are mourning the sudden loss.
The tragic event has once again raised concerns about road safety and reckless driving on national highways.
As news spread, hundreds of people from nearby villages gathered at the accident site, briefly disrupting traffic on the highway.
Police managed to control the crowd and restore normal traffic flow.
