KTR alerts officials in view of heavy rain forecast in next 3 days

Hyderabad, Oct 19: Telangana Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Minister KT Rama Rao on Monday alerted officials in view of heavy rains forecast by the Meteorological Centre during the next three days.

Speaking to newsmen after conducting a review meeting with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials, Rao said that the city was experiencing heavy rains for the second time after 100 years. First, it happened in 1908.

He asked the officials to evacuate people living in low lying areas immediately and shift them to the relief centres where all the facilities including food, medicine are available.

Stating that 80 special officers were appointed to review the flood situation in the next 15 days, the Minister said about Rs 45 crore were spent so far for the flood relief and rescue works.

For electricity restoration, the Minister said that 920 transformers were restored so far and 164 are yet to be restored. Dilapidated buildings were demolished by taking up a special drive in the city. So far Rs 60 crore were spent for SPDCL and Sewerage and Rs 670 crore to be spent for this purpose.

The Minister said that 33 people lost their lives due to heavy rains during the last week. The financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each was paid to 29 people so far.

He stated that 80 colonies are still in the water in the city. Of the 37,000 CM’s Relief ration kits along with three blankets worth Rs 2800, 17,000 kits were distributed to the affected families in the city so far.

Rao said Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao sought central assistance of Rs 1, 350 crores by sending a preliminary report to the centre. The same was informed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the phone by the Chief Minister. But yet to be reacted by the Centre. He hoped for a positive response from the Centre.
