BJP lost Jharkhand: ‘Mahagathbandhan’ gets clear majority

Ranchi, Dec 23: Jharkhand Mukti Morcha-led Mahagathbandhan, also comprising Indian National Congress, on Monday headed to form the next government in the mineral-rich state, leading in 43 assembly segments in the 81-member Vidhan Sabha while the ruling Bharatiya Janta Party was ahead in 28 seats.

Till 1700 hrs, BJP and JMM were leading in 28 seats each, INC in 14, JVM (Prajatantrik) and AJSU in three apiece, Independents in two while Rashtriya Janata Dal, Nationalist Congress Party and CPI (Marxist-Leninist) (Liberation) in one each.

The JMM, INC and Rashtriya Janata Dal contested the five-phase Jharkhand polls in alliance while the BJP went all alone.

Leader of Opposition and JMM’s acting president Hemant Soren thanked the people of Jharkhand for giving a clear mandate in favour of Mahagathbandhan and said that the day for him was a time to take a pledge to fulfil the aspirations of the people.

“With this mandate, a new chapter will commence in Jharkhand and the verdict was a milestone,” he said, adding soon a meeting of alliance partners will be held in which future course of action will be decided.

Raghubar Das resigns as CM

Incumbent Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das, facing imminent defeat in Jamshedpur East, has resigned from his post.

He handed over his resignation to Governor Draupadi Murmu at Raj Bhavan on Monday evening.

Das, a non-tribal leader of a tribal-dominated state, is staring at a shocking defeat at the hands of his former cabinet colleague and Independent candidate Saryu Roy who is giving him a tough fight for the Jamshedpur East seat. Das is trailing by over 15,000 votes. As of now, Roy got 73,332 votes whereas Das is trailing behind with 57,607 votes.
