Hyderabad, Sept 15: Four members of the notoriously dreaded “Kanjar Gang” of Madhya Pradesh, who last month had waylaid a container truck and looted cigarette cartons worth Rs.4 Crores near Peddaamberpet on the outskirts of the city, were arrested by the Rachakonda Police.
It is stated that this is the first time that members of the Kanjar Gang had been caught by the police. As a matter of fact, the gang struck terror among the MP police by even making many attempts to kill the police personnel. The gang was operating in various parts of the country, mainly targeting trucks and other heavy vehicles transporting cigarettes. The gang’s set target is stated to Rs.20 crores per year.
Rachakonda Commissioner of Police Mahesh Bhagwat on Friday produced before the media the four arrested members of the Kanjar Gang and detailed how the police succeeded in nabbing the accused persons. The arrested persons were Rajaram, Sunil Chavda, Raja Babu alias Satish and Hakam Singh, all residents of Dewas in Madhya Pradesh.
Narrating the details of the sensational highway dacoity that had occurred on August 19 near the Outer Ring Road at Peddamberpet under Hayathnagar PS limits, the Commissioner of Police said the Container Truck with the 647 cartons of cigarettes had left the ITC Company in Musherabad in the city for Renigunta.
About 30 members of the Kanjar Gang, who came in two Innova cars and lorries, waylaid the Container Truck and dragged the driver Akhilesh Yadav out of the vehicle, threatened and tied him with ropes. The dacoits then took the driver to an isolated placed and got unloaded the cigarette cartons into the lorries they had brought along with them and fled from the spot.
On a complaint lodged by the lorry driver, a case was registered in the Hayathnagar Police Station by Detective Inspector V V Chalapathi. The Rachakonda Police have taken the case a prestigious issue and formed special teams under the supervision of Tarun Joshi, Joint Commissioner, Daravath Janaki, Addl. DCP Crimes and M. Venkateshwar Rao, DCP.
The special teams investigating the dacoity collected CCTV footage from all Tollgates from Deglorr (Maharashtra) to Ananthapur and ORR. Besides this, they also visited Maharashtra and MP States and examined old offenders. During the course of the investigations, the officers based on a minor clue about the suspicious movements of Innova car with MP registration number succeeded the culprits as members of the notorious Kanjar Gang, which were involved in waylaying and looting Container Trucks transporting cigarettes and committing thefts in malls in different parts of the country.
Based on credible information, the investigating special teams proceeded to Indore, Dewas, and Bhopal of Madhya Pradesh to track down the Kanjar Gang. While the officers were busy probing for more clues to know the whereabouts of the gang, they received a tip-off and proceeded to a bus station at Dewas and arrested the four culprits. All the four arrested accused were stated to have confessed to the dacoity. The police also seized the four vehicles used in the dacoity from parking yards at Indore where they usually park them after committing the offense.
After producing all the four accused persons before the local jurisdictional magistrate, they were brought to Hyderabad on transit remand and further investigations.
